Description

Abraham Lincoln Autograph Endorsement Signed "And the defendant doth the like. Murphy & Lincoln p.d.", with an unsigned autograph endorsement at foot. No place or date (Champaign Co., Ill.; docketed July 1852), about one page, folio. In Nelson Ligget vs Samuel Frazier, the plaintiff claims that when Frazier "arrested and confined" him by virtue of a "supposed writ" he "did not show or read the said supposed writ to said plaintiff..." Beneath this Lincoln has written "the defendant's demurrer to the replication last above, is sustained; and the plaintiff stands by said replication." The venue for this suit, which involved acting sheriff Sam Frazier Jr. of Vermilion County, was changed to Champaign County on motion of the plaintiff's attorney. Light fold toning; Lincoln's writing is unusually small, but dark and plain. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
