Description
General Forrest Parole For Union Prisoner. Partially printed document, PRISONER'S PAROLE, one page, 8" x 3.5", Rome, Georgia, May 4, 1863. It reads: "I, Jno. Severs, a Srgt of Co."K", 3rd Ohio Inft of the United States Army, captured by Brig. Gen. Forrest, solemnly swear before Almighty God, the Sovereign Judge, that I will not bear arms against the Confederate State Government, nor help, aid, or assist, either directly or indirectly, any person or persons, in making war against the same, until regularly exchanged as a prisoner of war, and that I will not, at any time, communicate to any person information received within the Confederate lines, detrimental to the same." The document is signed by a Colonel A.W. Caldwell, C.S.A. Printed on light blue Confederate paper. Smoothed folds, else fine condition. The Union soldier paroled here was one of over 1,500 captured by Forrest on May 3, 1863 when he put an end to the irritating raids of Yankee Colonel Abel Streight.Auction Info
