[visible through mat] semi-profile seated portrait of the future President. Warmly inscribed by in black ink at lower left "For Tessie: with memory and thanks for Melbourne hospitality - Lyndon B. Johnson June 17, 1942". Fine condition. Johnson met Tessa Smallpage, a singer and hostess at the American Servicemen's club, while he was stationed in Australia during World War II. Matted with an 18 October 1966 frontpage feature from Australian newspaper The Sun describing their acquaintance (10.75 x 14.75 in.; 273 x 375 mm.); exhibiting toning, tattering, and tape repair.
