Description
Generically, among the rarest of all U.S. military headgear.
The Pattern 1813 "Tombstone" or "Wellington" Cap. Originally adopted for use by U.S. regular establishment troops in 1813, this shako continued in general use until 1821 with the adoption of the bellcrown. This is an exceptional specimen and a very rare form. Rises to 6½" in the front, the back of the helmet extends downward approximately 1" forming a pseudo neck protector. The approx 2" leather visor exhibits a 3/8" brass binding with the underside painted green. Silvered ball buttons attached at each side at the top, 14mm brass coin type buttons at the bottom. The ball buttons were doubtless originally the point of suspension for a woven cord, while the brass buttons appear to be purely ornamental. Pierced for a front plate with a 5/8" x 1 7/8" leather plume socket. The soft thin leather sweatband at the front is 2¼" high and stitched in place. A 3" soft leather flap folds under from a welt along the bottom edge at the rear and was clearly designed to be folded down for use as a neck protector. Absolutely incredible condition. Some minor crazing on the visor, and very mildly mis-shapen on the top, minor. Absolutely no flaking. 80% of the finish on the cap is as new. A rare opportunity to own a truly exceptional example of this very rare piece of American military headgear.Auction Info
