Description

Full Stock Percussion Rifle with Die-Stamped Signature on the Top Flat of the Barrel "Wm. S. Smith & Co./ Ft. Wayne, Ind.", Circa 1860. Smith initially worked in St. Marys, Ohio before moving to Ft. Wayne. 38¾" octagonal barrel with deeply rifled .40 caliber bore, 1" across the flats. German silver blade front sight, V notch rear. Single screw J. Golcher percussion lock, double set triggers. Barrel and lock with nice smooth dark patina. Mechanically perfect with fine bore. All brass furniture including elaborate trigger guard and 6¾" toeplate. The upper 13" of the forestock, nose cap, and upper ramrod pipe, are all modern replacements. The original portion of the maple stock is very fine with nice rich patina and very tight, distinctive, artificial curl. A nice rifle by a desirable maker, worthy of expert restoration.
