Description

Apollo 14 Crew-Signed U.S.S. Spiegel Grove Recovery Force Cover. A philatelic cover with the "Apollo 14/ Atlantic/ Recovery Force/ U.S. Navy" stamped cachet and a 10¢ "First Man On The Moon" stamp canceled February 9, 1971, aboard the U.S.S. Spiegel Grove, one of the ships in the force. It is signed: "Stuart A Roosa", "Edgar Mitchell", and "Alan Shepard" in various inks. This was the third successful manned lunar landing mission; this one explored the Fran Mauro formation. Alan Shepard was the first American in space and he made history once again during this mission by hitting two golf balls on the moon. Unaddressed. Excellent.

On February 9, Apollo 14's Command Module Kitty Hawk splashed down in the South Pacific Ocean concluding a nine-day lunar mission. The spacecraft landed just four miles from the prime recovery vessel, U.S.S. New Orleans. Recovery operations were promptly executed by U.S. Navy Underwater Demolition Team swimmers, who assisted astronauts Alan Shepard, Edgar Mitchell, and Stuart Roosa into life rafts before they were airlifted to the recovery ship. Adhering to NASA's back-contamination protocols, the crew entered a Mobile Quarantine Facility aboard the New Orleans immediately after recovery. Subsequently, they were transported to American Samoa and then to Houston, Texas, where they remained in quarantine until February 27, marking the final instance of lunar mission quarantine procedures. From the Family Collection of Jacques Bracke.
