Savien de Cyrano de Bergerac; A. Lovell, translator. The Comical History of the States and Empires of the Worlds of the Moon and Sun. London: Henry Rhodes, 1687. First edition in English. Two volumes in one, complete. Octavo. Frontispiece, [viii], 140, [2, blank]; [2, title page], 206, [2, errata] pages; general title page and each volume with separate title page and pagination. Illustrated with frontispiece by F. H. Van Hove. Later binding by Riviere & Son; polished brown calf, decorated in blind and gilt with light brown leather inlays, spine decorated in gilt with five raised bands and light brown leather spine label lettered in gilt. Minor edgewear, rear joint just starting, front joint repaired, a few light abrasions to boards. Marbled endpapers, inner dentelles gilt; some offsetting, front hinge repaired and reinforced, penciled bookseller's notations and minor soiling to the front free endpaper verso. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges trimmed and gilt; somewhat foxed, minor intermittent soiling, text block unevenly toned, a few pages creased, minor text block edgewear. Housed in blue cloth clamshell case by Lamb and Buck with navy blue leather spine label lettered in gilt. Near fine.One of the earliest astronomical fantasy novels, a classic "cosmic voyage" introducing concepts and technology that influence science fiction to this day. "It is quite unlike any other writing of the same century, either in France or elsewhere, where utopian preoccupations were still the more noticeable format for early examples of science fiction" (Anatomy of Wonder).
