The text is based upon an address by Professor Van Alstyne to the Annual Conference of the United State Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, delivered on May 17, 1984, at Williamsburg, Virginia. In 1984, Justice Ginsburg was serving as a Judge in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. She was nominated to this position by Jimmy Carter on April 14, 1980, confirmed by the Senate on June 18, 1980, and received commission on June 18, 1980. She served on the Court of Appeals until August 9, 1993, when commissioned to the United States Supreme Court.
