Roscoe Conkling (1829-1888) was a U.S. Politician and the leader of the "Stalwart" faction of the post-Civil War Republican Party. He served as: a member of the United States House of Representatives from New York (1859-1866); and a member of the United States Senate (1867-1882). Freeman Thorp found Conkling to be brilliant and much to be admired as well as gracious and courteous, but added "...except when he sat for a sketch. He seemed to feel the matter was too trivial and unimportant."
