Thomas. Bewick. History of British Birds, Volume I. Newcastle: Printed by Sol. Hodgson, for Beilby & Bewick, 1797. First edition, state A. With a one page autograph note dated 1882 bound in front. The note gives the origin of many of the small vignette illustrations in the volume. Octavo (9.5 x 6 inches; 241 x 152 mm). Volume I only. xxx, 335 pages. With wood-engraved illustrations by the author. Contemporary half binding over marbled boards lettered in gilt on the spine. Very good. [Together with:] T[homas]. Bewick. History of British Birds (Volume I Land Birds; Volume II Water Birds). Newcastle: Printed for Edward Walker, for T. Bewick, 1805. Later printing. Two octavo volumes (10.25 x 7 inches; 260 x 178 mm). Illustrated with numerous wood engravings by the author. Contemporary leather bindings, skillfully re-backed. Lettered in gilt. Marbled edges and endpapers. Light to moderate shelf wear; internally clean with occasional light scattered foxing. Very good.Auction Info
