Description

Documents from the Reigns of King Henry VI and King Henry VIII. Includes:

Document from the Reign of King Henry VI. One page on vellum (in Latin), 11 5/8 x 4 1/2 inches, [England]; [1436]. With seal tag. Henry VI, the only son of Henry V, ascended the English throne in 1422 at just eight years old. He ruled as King of England until 1461, when his forces were defeated in the Wars of the Roses and he was forced into exile in Scotland. In 1470, he briefly regained the throne, but his restoration was short-lived-he was shortly thereafter imprisoned in the Tower of London, where he died on May 21, 1471.

Document from the Reign of King Henry VIII. One page on vellum, 11 1/4 x 2 inches, Essex; [June 21], 1546. This small legal document states in Latin that George Byton releases his claim on a plot of woodland that is to be worked by a tenant named Galfrid Boryng. Henry VIII, remembered today for initiating the English Reformation, reigned from 1509 until his death in 1547. He infamously married six times, annulling three of those unions and executing two of his wives. His dispute with the Catholic Church over the legitimacy of annulments ultimately led him to break from papal authority and establish the Church of England.

Condition: Both documents docketed on verso; minor soiling throughout. A bit of loss to the Henry VI document, affecting a few words, with fraying to the end of the seal.
