Description
Gideon Welles Autograph Letters Signed (2). Two letters dated March 1, 1828, and September 24, 1855, measuring 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 inches and 5 x 8 inches, respectively.The first, one page of a bifolium, is addressed to "The President of Washington College Parthenon." Welles thanks the president for electing him an honorary member of the Parthenon Society, a literary society at Washington College in the early 19th century. In part: "I acknowledge the receipt of your note of this date, informing, that 'by a vote of the Washington College Parthenon I have been elected an Honorary Member thereof.' With sincere pleasure I accept of this mark of your esteem, and beg through you to express my grateful acknowledgements to the members of the Parthenon..." Signed, "Gideon Welles." With integral address panel on the verso.
The second letter is one page of a bifolium and is addressed to "Luther Graves, Esq." in Rochester. Welles writes to inquire about obtaining a new insurance policy. In part: "Since the failure of the Protection Co which took place a year since, I have been without a policy. In that company you had an Insurance for $2000 - loss if any to be paid to me. May I ask your immediate attention to this subject. A policy in any other sound company will be acceptable to me." Signed, "Gideon Welles." Welles's letter is followed by three additional autograph letters signed on pages two and three of the same bifolium, addressed to Welles from Luther Graves, C. Q. Armelin, and R. Armstrong, each regarding the transmission of the new insurance policy to Welles.
Together with a steel engraving of Welles by Virtue & Yorston, published in 1865, measuring 8 x 10 3/4 inches. Also includes a fourteen-page typewritten genealogy of the Welles family, ending with Welles and his nine children with Mary Jane Hale.
Condition: Each letter lightly toned with smoothed folds; minor creasing and edgewear; a few very light stains. March 1 letter with small pencil annotation at bottom edge of first page. September 24 letter docketed on the verso.
