Description
Bushrod Washington Autograph Document Signed. One page, 7 3/4 x 4 1/4 inches, Georgetown; August 2, 1815. A promissory note made out to George C. Washington, grandnephew of President George Washington, for "one thousand two hundred and forty eight dollars thirty cents." Signed, "Bush. Washington." Additionally signed twice by George C. Washington. With a blind embossed seventy-five cent stamp near the center.Bushrod Washington was the nephew of George Washington. At the end of 1798 he was appointed to the Supreme Court, taking the place vacated by the death of his law teacher and mentor, James Wilson. He served on the Court until his death in 1829. Because of his preeminence in the Virginia bar, Washington's case reports were highly regarded and were considered particularly thorough and authoritative. Cases decided by the Virginia court in the first years of the Republic were precedent setting and continue to be of interest. In 1802, following the death of Martha Washington, he inherited Mount Vernon and resided there for the rest of his life.
Condition: Lightly toned with flattened folds. Three punched "x" cancellations through the center of the document, touching text but not affecting legibility; loss at the top edge due to cancellation. Two light pencil annotations. Docketed on the verso.
