Description

[Civil War]. Robert H. Hatton Autograph Note Signed ("R. Hatton Brig. Gen. Cog.") Days Before His Death at the Battle of Seven Pines. One page, 6.75" x 5.625", "Junction of 7 & 9 Mile road" [Virginia]; May 24, 1862. In pencil. Note to an unknown recipient presumed to be General Gustavus W. Smith discussing his intention to retire his command that night and transmitting news of a skirmish that resulted in three Confederate casualties. It was penned by Hatton the day after he was appointed brigadier general, and just one week before his death. The note, while brief, clearly illustrates the tension that would erupt into full-scale battle days later. He writes, in full:

"I will retire my command to-night, to a point on the 7 mile road, 1 ½ miles from this. The enemy are in considerable force in my immediate front. In my skirmish today I lost but 3 men. The enemy must have lost 70 or 70." Signed as brigadier general in command of the 4th Brigade.

Robert H. Hatton (1826-1862), a lawyer from Tennessee, initially opposed secession from the Union but enlisted in the Confederate forces shortly after the firing of Fort Sumter. He was appointed a colonel of the 7th Tennessee Infantry but was promoted to brigadier general the day before penning this letter due to his meritorious service in the early months of the Peninsula campaign. On May 31, 1862, he was shot in the head while leading his men in an advance at Seven Pines, dying instantly. A battlefield communication with associations like this is a scarcity.

Condition: Uneven bottom edge. Minute scattered soiling.
