Stuttgart and Augsburg: J. G. Cotta'scher Verlag, 1858.FIRST EDITION. 8vo. [i-iii] iv-vi, [1] 2-460 pages. Twenty-four wood-engraved plates, including frontispiece. Original dark green embossed gilt pictorial cloth, gilt pictorial spine, and marbled edges. Housed in a modern cloth slipcase.
Strubberg (1808-1889) launched his literary career with this work, and with its publication joined that group of writers who so gripped the German imagination and reading public in the mid and late nineteenth century with their stories, tales, travels, and descriptions of Texas, Mexico, and the West. This book derives from his experiences in Texas. Set in the area around Leona, Texas, the book describes encounters with Native Americans, activities of wild animals, and the vastness of the Western landscape.
Graff writes, "This is Strubberg's first work. The scene is laid on the Leona, a tributary of the Rio Grande. The author describes in great minuteness several years of his life there. In no other work in German literature and perhaps in no other literature, has the prairie been portrayed with more skill than in this work."
Condition: Minor scuffing to the spine and the lower cover. Minor smudging to endpapers. Text block edges are toned and minor foxing throughout.
