Description
Juan Nepomuceno Almonte Letter Signed. One page on Ministerio de Guerra y Marina letterhead, 8.5" x 12.25", Mexico, August 31, 1846.Letter addressed to the Inspector General of the Military regarding the payment of military physicians Drs. Manuel Manrique de Lara and Mariano Garces. The letter reads, in full, "Conforming with the order stated by V.S. in the note number 166, the E.S. General as Chief of the Liberating Republican Army...administer this month's pay of Dr. Manuel Manrrique de Lara and his first assistant, Dr. Mariano Garces, to which effect I write this note to the E.S. Minister of Finance so that it serves him to administer their respective pays. God and Liberty." Signed, "Almonte." Marginal note at the left margin that reads, "Transcribe to the Dr. Manuel Manrique de Lara for his effects."
Having suffered multiple defeats and occupations less than a month after Almonte approved the doctors' payments, Mexican forces clashed with American troops in the Battle of Monterrey. One of the key battles in the Mexican American War, the Battle of Monterrey resulted in the defeat of Mexican General Pedro de Ampudia and his Army of the North. Ampudia had been previously warned by superiors to retreat from Monterrey, but the general refused in the hopes of clinching a victory from the U.S. On September 21, 1846, the U.S. Army of Occupation, led by Zachary Taylor, attacked from both the east and the west. Three days later, Taylor negotiated a two-month armistice with Ampudia in return for the surrender of Monterrey. The loss greatly affected morale amongst Mexican troops and was largely regarded as the beginning of the end of the war.
Juan Nepomuceno Almonte played a pivotal role in Texan and Mexican affairs throughout the 1830s and 1840s. Aide-de-camp to Santa Anna, Almonte traveled with the president and military leader to Texas to quell the rebellion in January 1836. He served as head of the Guerrero battalion in the fateful Battle of San Jacinto which resulted in his capture and imprisonment by Texian Thomas J. Rusk. The Mexican soldier joined Santa Anna in jail on Galveston Island, serving as his interpreter, before he was finally released with the leader in 1837. Almonte served as Minister of War during the Mexican American War and played a pivotal role in advising then-President Mariano Paredes and organizing Mexican troops. It was during this period that Almonte signed this letter.
Condition: Creased along fold with irregular left margin. Red archival notations to the left margin.
