"An excellent assembly of the information a prospective emigrant from Great Britain would like to have about Texas. Ikin had arrived in Texas in January, 1841, as the bearer of two of the three treaties between England and Texas, signed in November, 1840... Undoubtedly this book was published as a step in the promotion of the interests of Arthur Ikin and his father Jonathan in projects for colonization of Texas" (Streeter).
While in Texas Arthur Ikin and his Father, Jonathan, had been named as two of the incorporators of the Texas Trading, Mining, and Emigrating Company in an act passed by the Fifth Congress of Texas on January 30, 1841. About this time the elder Ikin had been given by the Texas Congress an extension of time to introduce emigrants to Texas under an earlier act of Congress. During his short stay in Texas, Arthur Ikin was appointed consul of Texas at London but did not formally serve as consul. The map shows the southwestern boundary at the Rio Grande extending south to the edge of the map, but with the note: The boundary here runs to a point in the Lat 42°. Texas includes Santa Fe and Taos. The northern border is the Arkansas River, right above which the British cartographer has placed Oregon Terr. The Cross Timbers is indicated by a swath of trees, and roads are labeled U.S. Traders Road and Old Spanish Road.
Condition: Binding sympathetically rebacked with matching cloth, slight fading along top edge of upper cover, minor rubbing to extremities. Front free endpaper remargined, a few small discreet repairs to blank margins of title-page, title-page slightly soiled and with small reinforcement to upper fore-corner. Map removed from binding and strengthened at folds on verso, some minor toning and soiling. Very good.
