Tornel Warns of Anglo Ambitions and Encourages Further War with Texas

José Maria Tornel. Tejas y los Estados Unidos de América, en sus relaciones con la República Mexicana. Mexico: Ignacio Cumplido, 1837.

FIRST EDITION. 12mo. 98 pages. Original printed yellow wrappers with title within ornamental border.

"A plea for a vigorous continuation of the Texan war...Tornel says that the loss of Texas would mean the loss of New Mexico and the Californias" (Streeter).

Written only a year after the Battle of San Jacinto that resulted in Texas' independence, Tornel uses this report to warn Mexicans of American ambition.

"General Tornel, Minister Plenipotentiary to the U.S. from Mexico, tried to stop colonization of Texas by refusing passports to applicants in 1830. He was unsuccessful. Yet in the book, Tornel gives a fair account of Mexican-Texan relations and includes a summary of all land grants in Texas up to 1837" (Fifty Texas Rarities).

Condition: Light staining to wrappers, spine a bit darkened. Text toned throughout with minor foxing. Very scarce in original wrappers.
