Description
Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna Signed Appointment. Two pages of a bifolium, 8" x 11.75", Mexico City; May 13, 1834.Appointment of Manuel Bulnes to first notary of the Secretary of State and the Office of War and the Navy. The document reads, in part, "Given the merit and service of the citizen Manuel Bulnes, second notary of the Secretary of State and the Office of War and the Navy, I confer upon him the position of first notary of the said secretary which has become vacant by the departure of Mauro Guido who had previously held the position." Bulnes' promotion included a salary of six hundred pesos per year. Signed, "Ant. Lopez de Santa Anna" and countersigned by José J. de Herrera. The official seal remains intact.
Only two weeks after Santa Anna signed this appointment, he issued the Plan of Cuernavaca which repealed all progressive laws, dissolved Congress, and decreed Santa Anna the dictator of his new centralist regime. The de facto coup was orchestrated by political mastermind José Maria de Tornel, who was at the time acting as the Governor of the Federal District. The policies enacted under Santa Anna's unilateral rule resulted in growing discontentment in Texas and ultimately, the Texas Revolution.
Condition: The two pages of the bifolium are almost entirely separated along the integral fold, with some paper loss likely due to prior binding. There is light foxing throughout and a circular cut cancellation through both pages, affecting the text but with no loss. The placement of the seal partially obscures Santa Anna's signature.
