Description

Very Scarce Civil War Merrimac Token Medal. Although collectors differ on the precise nomenclature to apply to this piece (medal or token) they rarely surface and are highly sought after. This is the only Civil War token struck in iron and the reverse of the 26mm planchet is struck "Made From The Armour Plate Of The Merrimac". The face depicts the C.S.S. Virginia with the legend "The First Ironclad 1862" with a serrated edge. Overall very good condition with smooth dark age patina and some scattered areas displaying an old coat of surface rust. Nice example of a seldom offered Civil War token/medal.
