Description

Very Fine US M1840 Light Artillery Saber. Doubtless a very early example although totally unmarked. Blade about mint, bright and clean with absolutely no rust, pitting or nicks. Hilt with an old coat of lacquer, else near perfect just a few very minor dings. The grip retains about 90% of the original leather, just a few chips at the bottom, the wire wrap is missing. The underside of the guard is recessed with the original leather washer. The scabbard, which is fabricated without a throat, is a smooth deep dark age patina with absolutely no dents, just some light to medium pitting around and on the drag, otherwise really exceptional. Scarce form and a pretty sword.
