Description

Grouping from Soldier in Pennsylvania's Famous "Reserve Brigade." Young Samuel B. Frey enlisted in Co. A, 32nd Pennsylvania Vol. Infantry (3rd Reserves) on June 7, 1861 and served three full years with the unit, seeing heavy fighting throughout the Peninsular Campaign, at South Mountain, Antietam and Fredericksburg. This grouping of Frey's memorabilia includes his "Bridesburg" contract Model 1861 Springfield rifled musket, dated 1863. Frey has carved his initials, "SBF," into the stock and altered the weapon postwar by removing the steel barrel bands and "shoulders" that held them and by adding brass "pipes" to hold the original ramrod (still with it). The metal is basically smooth with pitting around the nipple and the mechanism operates fine. The stock is sound and shows only a few minor nicks and dents. With the musket is Frey's black bridle leather waist belt with issued brass oval "U.S." hook and arrow belt plate. The belt still has attached the frog portion of the bayonet scabbard. The plate has a wonderful patina and the belt is split and almost broken where it connects with the plate. With the set is a knees-up sixth plate tintype view of Frey standing in his frock coat, trousers and forage cap. The image is in its original full case with split spine. A nice grouping that represents a stalwart of the Reserve Brigade.
