Description
Pvt. Richard B. Loomis, 21st Mass. Vols. Handwritten Letter Detailing the Siege and Battle at Knoxville, Tennessee. 4 pages, 5" x 8" folio. Probably the most information, with great detail, that we've ever seen crammed into a four page letter. Bright crisp ink script, dated Dec. 21, 1863, headed "in the woods 20 miles above Knoxville". This letter covers the entire period of the siege including Longstreet's attempt to surround and capture Burnside's Army as well as a wealth of other information, "There are some Johnnie rebs about and we have had our hands full....what hardships...we have been on the move all the time, scarcely stopping two nights in one place except at Knoxville....Longstreet thought sure he had got Burnside & his little army....a sharp running fight all the way....19 days the siege lasted....The Rebs attempted to charge on Benjamin Battery ...our boys were ready for them...the Rebs did plant their colors on the parapet when the grape & canister...mowed them down in heaps.", much additional information. A great letter providing information on a little known action. Includes the original envelope. Loomis would be wounded by a Confederate sharpshooter at Petersburg June 18, 1864 (see next item).Auction Info
