Description

Gettysburg Related Muster Roll of Co. H, 121st Pennsylvania Vol. Inf. with Notations Concerning Engagements at Gettysburg on July 1. Dated and completed June 30, 1863 at Emmittsburg, Maryland. 21" x 23" pre-printed form filled out in ink script on both sides. Some separation and minor loss at folds which have been neatly repaired with archival tape, detracts little, otherwise excellent. As is typical of these documents, provides detailed disposition of each soldier as of the date it was filled out, as well as a day by day itinerary of the unit from May 1st to June 30th (including Chancellorsville), in itself important information. Signed by Col. Chapman Biddle, who would be severely wounded the next day at Gettysburg. Biddle's remarks are also of considerable interest as he rates the regiment's clothing as "Indifferent" and comments on the unit's arms as being "Excellent - Springfield rifled musket cal. 58 Jenks's contract [Bridesburgs]". Although completed on June 30 , the roll was obviously not immediately turned in as it contains a note in the Remarks section, "The regt was marched immediately after muster to Marsh Creek, Pa. - went on picket, from picket on July 1, 1863 to Gettysburg: went at once into action where Lt. Fink was wounded subsequently taken to hospital". The 121st Penna. was part of Doubleday's Division, 1st Corps, and was heavily engaged during the first day's fight at the edge of McPherson's Woods, sustaining heavy casualties with Co. H losing eight out of the thirty-one men listed on the muster roll. An important Gettysburg document.
