Description
Cavalry Tactics Book Belonging to John Brown's Son. Inside the front cover of this volume of Cooke's U.S. Cavalry Tactics, Vol. 2 is clearly inscribed in ink "Capt. John Brown Jr./ Company K. 1st Cavalry/ 7th Regt. Kansas Volunteers/ March 12th 1862." Brown was commissioned Captain in the 7th Kansas Volunteers on January 10, 1862 and was discharged for disability on May 27. The book itself, printed in 1862 and authored by Gen. Philip St. George Cooke, is "crisp" and in fine condition with only a little soiling and some chipping to the pressed-paper covers. The eldest son of the famed abolitionist John Brown, John Brown, Jr. was born in Ohio in July of 1821. Along with four brothers, he moved out west to Kansas in 1854. After his father's actions in "Bloody Kansas", John Jr. was arrested, mistreated while in prison, and later released. Shortly after this, John Jr. left Kansas with his father. He might have been aware of the plans for the raid at Harpers Ferry in Virginia but was not a part of the raid itself. A truly rare artifact with a unique personal connection to one of the Civil War's most noteworthy (or notorious) families.
