Description
Interesting and Actually Very Scarce Set of Three Confederate Two Piece Buckles Produced Circa 1890 by Calvin Gilbert at the Sterner Iron Foundry in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Originally established in 1837 as the Gettysburg Iron Foundry, views of the building can be found in Frassanito's Early Photography at Gettysburg. Originally produced as souvenirs, these plates were part of the iconic Lee's headquarters Museum in Gettysburg and two of the plates still retain their original inventory tags; the other has an inventory number painted on the back. The plates are incredibly well done and very convincing. Only a handful of these have surfaced over the years and they doubtless were not great sellers as the real plates, at the time, probably cost little more than these reproductions. Great addition to a Gettysburg display.Auction Info
