Description
Remarkable Civil War Letter from an Officer at a Confederate Western Outpost That Has Yet to Surrender, Thirty-five Days After Appomattox. Bright, crisp, ink script, 4 full pages, 7¼" x 9¼", folio, on typical Confederate blue/gray paper. Written and signed by "J. Scuddy Levrod", headed Ordnance Depot, Natchitoches, La., May 15th 65. Discusses the terms of surrender that have been offered to Gen. Taylor and characterizes the situation as "sad and humiliating" but recognizes that "it is the only policy left." Reports that the wives of Genls. Smith, Buckner, and several other prominent officers are to leave the next day by "flag of truce boat" for New Orleans, thence on to Europe. Much other information, making it clear Scuddy is a very literate officer who clearly wants the war to be over in Louisiana. Near perfect condition and an attractive and historic Civil War letter. Encased in an archival double sided mount.Auction Info
