Description

Extra Tall "Zouave" Style Civil War Chasseur Cap. This splendid example of an early war cap has a tall, deep blue body colorfully trimmed in red. A ½" wide red stripe runs through the middle of the lower band and there is narrow red welting at the top of the band, up the sides and around the crown. The cap is pleasingly tall, with the front rising almost 4". The condition of the wool is remarkable, with no moth damage or discoloration. There are several sections of open seams which can be easily repaired. The piece lacks a chinstrap and sidebuttons. The original bound visor is firmly attached with some fragments of newspaper adhering to the deep green underside from years of storage. About half the thin leather sweatband is present but the lining is completely missing. A small piece of paper with the owner's name (now indecipherable) is attached to the thin glazed paper stiffener in the crown. A classic and most attractive example of headwear from the first years of the Civil War.
