Description

Female Figure on a Litter

Veracruz
Ça 600-900 AD
Unslipped ceramic

7½" High x 4¾" Wide

This elaborately dressed figure appears to be attached to a scaffold. Her dress indicates that she is a female. The enormous headdress and ear ornaments mark her as a ruler or noble person. Birdlike devices are perched on each shoulder. These figures are mysterious. They are traditionally considered to be prisoners, but in ancient depictions of prisoners, the captive is generally shown stripped of his or her garments and emblems. In this case, she is adorned. More recent scholarship suggests the image is a noble person about to be carried in a litter. The mask that covers the lower part of her face identifies her as a deity impersonator. The object is in good condition with minimal restoration.
