Description

Hacha in Human Head Form

Veracruz
Ça 600-900 AD
Carved from porous volcanic stone

11" High x 8½" Wide

Hachas are so called because, to some, they resemble ax heads. Ceramic figurines and stone carvings suggest that hachas were attached to yokes and worn in the ancient ballgame. Hachas and yokes are frequently found together in burials. This hacha presents a human face carved in the round wearing a crested headdress. It has two small tenons at the back that were used to attach it to another object.
