Description
Smiling Dog Seated at AttentionColima
Ça 200 BC-200 AD
Slipped and burnished ceramic
12" High x 6½" Wide
Dogs with a variety of facial expressions and shown in a variety of poses were among the favorite subjects for Colima artists. This dog is presented in two colors of slip. The areas around his eyes and mouth have been painted with a darker pigment. Eyes and mouth were incised when the clay was leather hard. The vessel's spout emerges from the top of the dog's head. The object is in quite good condition. There is a small restoration on one of the feet. The surface is mottled and has sustained some minor chipping.
