Alfred Torbert: Signed Carte de Visite. An 1865 Mathew Brady CDV with gold-ruled border. It has a vignetted portrait of Union general Alfred Thomas Archimedes Torbert and is signed on the image, "A. G. Torbert Brvt Maj. G. V." Torbert (1833-1880) was a native of Delaware and received a commission as a lieutenant in the Confederate Army. He chose, however, to serve the Union cause and saw action at South Mountain, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. He also commanded cavalry under Philip Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley campaign. He is identified on the verso as "Chief of Staff" to Sheridan.
