Description
Untouched Civil War Confederate Foot Officer's Sword, Although Unmarked, Doubtless the Work of E. J. Johnston & Co. of Macon, Georgia. 29.5" blade with straight ricasso shoulder and slightly rounded back. The hilt of the standard 1850 pattern, but with plain unembellished pommel cap. The floral piercings exhibiting some crudeness in their finish. Polished wood grip that was originally wrapped with what was clearly twisted wire, which is now missing. Original leather scabbard with sheet brass mounts and incised line decoration. The mounts exhibit the unusual anomaly of the carrying rings actually being of iron which are overlayed with sheet brass. Blade generally smooth and dark gray with a few small patches of light pitting, a bit heavier at the tip. Hilt perfect with nice patina, just one tiny chip on the front of the grip at the base of the pommel cap. Mounts perfect, also with great untouched patina, just a few chips on the top carrying ring, exposing the iron core. The original leather scabbard generally very good with an old repair to a break between the middle and lower mounts and two small holes near the top mount, quite sound. The entire sword completely untouched/ uncleaned. The sword has verbal provenance of use by a Tennessee officer. Very nice untouched example of a Confederate foot officer's sword attributable to maker.Auction Info
