Description

Unique B. Douglas Enlisted Cavalry Saber With Fixed Ring Mounts and Oil Cloth Grip 33" blade with rather narrow unstopped fuller at the back of the blade that extends to within 1" of the hilt and 9" of the tip, excellent with smooth gray patina, absolutely no rust pitting or edge nicks and just a few minor forging flaws. Retains the original large, thin scalloped edge leather washer. Hilt with rough cast recessed panel on the underside and the entire guard including branches and knucklebow where it enters the pommel cast flat. Nicely finished but with an extra little burr between the outboard and second branches. Undecorated pommel cast with a delineating line between the very top and lower sections. Oilcloth grip with single strand iron wire wrap perfect. Hilt overall with fine untouched patina. Rather large with plain sheet brass mounts with the top two mounts having the carrying rings fixed in place cast integrally with a rather heavy 2" base that is soldered to the side of the mount. Lower mount with heavy brass drag exhibiting the characteristic accentuated finials on each end. The leather scabbard is sound and complete with no cracks or breaks but considerable finish crackling and some flaking. All stitching intact. An exceptional untouched example of this Confederate cavalry saber that is unique in our experience. Ex-Steve Hess Collection.
