Pristine Set Of 1861 US Infantry Tactics ID'd To Sylvester Hatch 8th Maine Inf. Died at Andersonville. "U. S. Infantry Tactics" complete in one volume, Philadelphia, J. B. Lippincott & Co., 1861. 4" X 5 3/8", black cloth, gilt stampings, 450 pp., plus fold out plate and advertising in back. About perfect, complete condition. Period script ID, obviously written by the owner, "Sylvester Hatch, Wells, York Co. Me." Hatch enlisted as a sergeant in the 8th Maine Vol. Inf. on 9/17/61, was promoted to 1st Sergeant in 1864 and captured at Drewry's Bluff, 5/16/64. Hatch died in Andersonville 8/19/64 and is buried in Andersonville National Cemetery in grave #6112. Hatch served with this heavily fought regiment through the first three years of the war prior to his capture. The regiment lost a total of 134 men killed and mortally wounded.
