Description

Great Sixth Plate Tintype of a Civil War Cavalryman along with the Original Bearskin Mittens He Is Wearing in the Image. Image of superb quality in about perfect condition. Wears shell jacket with sergeant's stripes tinted gilt on the sleeves, although there are not actually any on the coat. Saber belt with rectangular eagle plate, holding the saber cradled in his arm still attached to the suspensory straps. Pair of Colt M1851 Navies tucked in the front of his belt. Wears large pair of bearskin mittens. Included with the image is the original pair of mittens he is, in fact, wearing. Near perfect condition, just showing some minor honest wear on the leather areas on the inside of the hands. Lined with gray wool, almost like blanket material. Overall still very soft and pliable, and just some very minor loss of hair along the edges of the leather covering for the insides of the hands, and a couple of small spots at the edges of the cuffs. Absolutely unquestionably the same set of mittens shown in the image. Image housed in full case, hinge repaired. A remarkable set and absolutely unique in our experience.
