Model 1917 US Helmet With Original "Tell it to the Marines" Painted Inscription. Model 1917 US helmet in over-all excellent condition with period replaced leather chinstrap. Retains the original white painted inscription "Tell it to the Marines" .In an 1806 book called "The Post Captain" whenever a ship captain heard a story getting too tall for his taste, he would say, 'You may tell that to the Marines, but I'll be damned if the Sailors will believe it!'.Auction Info
