Description

Battleship U.S.S. Maine Bronze Relic Plaque. Important Large U.S.S. Maine Memorial Bronze Plaque, Made From Metal
Recovered From the Ship Itself. The blowing-up of the Maine in Havana
Harbor in 1898 was, of course, the incident that triggered the Spanish American War. This elegant, massive 17.25" x 12.5" piece, in soft high relief, pictures the ship sinking below the waves as the goddess Columbia solemnly holds a large shield marked "Patriotism ... Devotion." "This tablet is cast from metal recovered from the U.S.S. Maine" appears below. The sculptor was Charles Keck, the foundry J.N.O. Williams, Inc. of New York, and the date 1913. It is marked "Tablet No. 738" and is in beautiful condition.
