Description

[Walton Taber], "Escape from Andersonville", pen and ink with gouache, 11.5" x 13.5" (sight size), matted and framed to an overall size of 17.5" x 19.5", unsigned, marked on the verso "Art Department, The Century Co., Union Square, New York City". Referenced in The American Heritage Collection of Civil War Art, page 386, #464. Sold at Christie's East, The Century Collection of Civil War Art, lot # 120.

Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Isaac Taber, sometimes listed as Walton Taber, became one of America's foremost illustrators, especially known for his nearly 250 illustrations for a project called Battles and Leaders of the Civil War. He was highly skilled in pen and ink drawings.

He studied at the Cooper Union Art School in New York and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy. He illustrated the first editions of Rudyard Kipling's Captain Courageous and contributed to many magazines including Century and St. Nicholas.
