Description
Visually and Historically Probably the Most Remarkable Civil War Captured Confederate Belt Set Extant. This is the exact plate pictured in Plate 040, bottom of P. 30 in Mullinax, which tells only half the story, as the original leather belt is not portrayed and is equally, if not more, impressive than the plate itself. The plate is an untouched, early war, Leech & Rigdon two piece interlocking CS, exhibiting an L on the inside of the wreath, with the top of the tongue bar widening slightly where it joins the disc. The back of the tongue bears the following period engraved legend " July 9, 1863 / Everett Robinson / Port Hudson, La." which continues on the front "Corp Co. G / 24 Me." The original 1 1/4" wide leather belt, the wreath attached with a period copper rivet as the stitching has opened, and the wreath exhibiting a tin wire adjusting hook and leather loop, is carved for its entire length, beginning at the wreath, doubtless by Robinson in the field immediately after its capture, as follows; "CO. G 24 Me / Everett Robinson / ( large X) Port. Hudson La. / July 9 1863". Unlike anything we've ever seen and the entire presentation verges on breathtaking. The entire set is completely untouched, the belt tongue even retaining traces of gilt between the C and S. Belt in excellent sound condition. A few edge chips, negligible crackling to the original finish, absolutely no flaking, and reasonably supple.Everett Robinson enlisted in the 24th Maine as a 23 year old from China, Me. on 10/13/62, was promoted to Corporal 3/11/63, and mustered out in Augusta, Me. on 8/25/63. All in keeping with the historical record on the belt. The 24th Maine was present at the Confederate surrender of Port Hudson on the morning of July 9, 1863.
Certainly one of the rarest, and most impressive Civil War artifacts we've ever presented and never before offered for sale.
