Description

JUDAEA. Byzantine period, circa 500-600 CE. Terracotta zoomorphic vessel. Just under 6 inches (15 cm) in length and standing 4.85 inches (12.2 cm) tall, this unusual creature-shaped pitcher has a barrel-shaped body, bovine head spout, stumpy legs, a "tail" filling hole and a large ring handle. The body is partially decorated with light reddish painted rings. Small loss to the horns, otherwise intact, with areas of white slip glaze and light earthen encrustation adhering.
