Description
JUDAEA. Late Roman era, circa 300-500 CE. Terracotta hanging lantern. Standing 8 inches (20.2 cm) in height and 9 inches (23 cm) in width, this oval lantern is made from red terracotta with light buff slip overlay. The body is pierced over the extent of the lamp with a large opened section opened for oil lamps. On top of the piece, a loop for suspension of the lantern. Suspension handle broken and repaired, otherwise intact. See Archaeological Center no. 49, lot 364 for a lantern of similar form.From The Living Torah Museum Collection; ex Michael Kaufman Collection, acquired by private donation.
