Description

ANCIENT NEAR EAST. Iron Age II, circa 700-500 BCE. Assyrian or Sumerian crystal quartzite cosmetics container. Carved from a single large crystal of transparent quartzite 2.1 inches (51 mm) tall, this small bottle is of faceted octagonal form with a tapered base and narrowed, shaped neck, rounded lip and flat base, the interior bored out for storage of kohl or some similar cosmetic. See Hans-Peter Bühler, Antike Gefässe aus Edelsteinen, Mainz, 1973, nos. 44, 45, for similar vessels. With acrylic stand.
