Tombstone, Arizona: Two Documents of Early Storekeeper. Two documents relating to M. Calisher & Company, a Tombstone business. 1) ALS by M. Calisher & Company, Tombstone, Arizona Territory, to B. M. Jacobs, Tucson, December 21, 1879, regarding business matters. The letter, 7.75" x 9.75," is written on both sides on a printed form letter on M. Calisher letterhead. 2) ALS by M. Calisher & Company, Tombstone, Arizona Territory, to B. M. Jacobs, Tucson, July 28, 1880, concerning business matters. The letter, 7.75" X 9.75," is written on both sides on a printed form letter on M. Calisher & Company letterhead. M. Calisher & Company was a California firm that opened a store in Tombstone in 1879. The store, which sold general merchandise and lumber, and by 1882 was managed by the eighteenth-year old David Calisher, the son of the owner Michael Calisher. By 1882 the store was in trouble financially and when a fire broke out in the building, David was accused of arson in an attempt to collect insurance money. The fire was brought under control and David was acquitted. He left Tombstone soon after. Both letters have horizontal and vertical folds but are in good condition.Auction Info
