Lincoln County War: James Dolan, Peter Maxwell, Pat Garrett & Marshall A. Upson. These New Mexico documents relate primarily to Sheriff Pat Garrett, the man who killed Billy the Kid, and Marshall A. "Ash" Upson, the newspaper reporter who ghost-wrote Garrett's book recounting the events leading up to that controversial event. There are three 8 1/2" x 11" single-sided ledger sheets from "Charles Ilfield, Dealer in General Merchandise, Las Vegas, N.M." The first sheet, dated June 14, 1886, has numerous entries, including a shipment to "P. Garrett Roswell NM" containing flour, coffee, sugar, barbed wire and assorted dry goods. A second page, dated April 24, 1883, details a shipment of hardware sent to James J. Dolan, key figure in the notorious Sante Fe Ring that precipitated the Lincoln County War. The third ledger sheet details merchandise purchased by Pete Maxwell (the firm of "Brazil & Maxwell"), close friend of Billy the Kid who was conversing with Sheriff Pat Garrett when Billy the Kid appeared, just prior to his shooting. The next item is a scrapbook page containing an assortment of document fragments or clippings from Lincoln, New Mexico, dated 1881, where the name Garrett appears twice (apparently in the handwriting of a secretary or clerk). The entries relate to legal matters, including arrests made for larceny and carrying a concealed weapon. One fragment lists costs associated with affidavits, warrants, witnesses, swearing-in a jury, etc. The last item is an 8" x 7 1/2" ALS signed "Ash" (Marshall A. Upson), Silver City, New Mexico, December 16, 1880 to the territorial governor [Lew Wallace]. The content is intriguing. In part: "... I go to Las Vegas on next Thursday morning's train... You may count on my acting discretely. I know my men & understand the situation." (wrinkles with tape repairs on verso, none of which bleed through). We throw in for good measure a large ledger sheet titled "Register of Final Homestead Certificates" with the names of seven Lincoln County applicants, dated 1875 to 1885.
