AVIATION AND SPACE COLLECTIBLES

"Aeroplanes": Complete Set of Forty-eight Gallaher Ltd. Tobacco Cards from 1939, in Archival Binder Sleeves. A set of double-sided cards, issued right on the cusp of World War II, with particularly nice graphic images of these British planes, titled on the front and, 1.5" x 2.5" in size. Aircraft included: Spitfire, Hurricane, Blenheim, Wellington. De Havilland Flamingo, Mew Gull, Hampden, Tipsy, Mayo Composite, Autogiro, Electra Passenger, and Gloster Gladiator. Gallaher, Ltd. is a tobacco business founded in 1857 by Tom Gallaher in Derry, Ireland. By 1896, Gallaher had opened the largest tobacco factory in the world in Belfast, and the business was incorporated in Belfast and London to "carry on in all their branches the businesses of tobacco, cigar, cigarettes, and snuff manufacture." In 1916, the company began inserting printed advertising cards into the cigarette packages, a practice that continued for decades. Very fine.
