Description

Apollo 11 Training-Used "CSM TEC Star Chart" Directly from the John W. Young Collection, with Letter of Certification. Degree-divided on all four edges with hour divisions on the top and bottom, this 16" x 8" black chart on film, with white printing, is titled "CSM TEC STAR CHART (B)/ LAUNCH JULY 18". It was designed to be used in the command module for the trip home, known as the Trans-earth coast. The Sun, Earth, Mars, and the moon are all portrayed by colored dots in order to stand out against the star field. The outlines of a number of constellations are shown and many stars are named and numbered, including the stars named (backwards) for the crew of the ill-fated Apollo 1: "DNOCES" (Edward White the Second), REGOR (Roger Chaffee), and "NAVI" (Ivan "Gus" Grissom). July 18 was the secondary launch date for the mission. Very fine.

Included with this lot is a Letter of Certification signed by Young's widow, Susy Young. It reads, in full: "I hereby certify that the CSM TEC Start Chart (B) Launch July 18 that accompanies this letter was used in training for the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon July 16-24, 1969. It has been a part of the John W. Young collection since that time."
