Description

Apollo 9: NASA Vintage "Mission D Flight Plan, AS-503/CSM-503/LM-3" Book from Manned Spacecraft Center, July 3, 1968. An 8" x 10.5" x 0.625" staple-bound reference book. The nomenclature is a bit confusing as AS-503 and CSM-503 both flew as part of the Apollo 8 mission while LM-3 flew as part of the Apollo 9 mission. Apollo 8 was originally planned as the "D" mission (LM test in Earth orbit) for December 1968, crewed by McDivitt, Scott, and Schweickart. Grumman was running late on the lunar module LM-3 and when it was finally submitted to KSC in June 1968, it had numerous problems preventing it from flying that year. The plans were then changed: Apollo 8 was turned into a lunar orbit flight with no lunar module aboard and Apollo 9 became the "D" mission flying the LM-3 in low Earth orbit with the original Apollo 8 crew. A flight plan, such as this, provides the crew and Mission Control with a quick reference to the events planned during a spaceflight as well as a wealth of other miscellaneous information. A rare document, the first we have encountered. The staple has rusted through and the front cover is loose, otherwise fine.
