Two items signed by the crew of Commander Rick Hauck, Pilot Dick Covey, and Mission Specialists Mike Lounge, Dave Hilmers, and George "Pinky Nelson." As follows.Cover: A philatelic cover with a color photo of the above crew as their names were announced on February 26, 1987. The significance of Space Shuttle flight STS-26, known as the "Return to Flight" mission, cannot be overstated in the history of the American space program. This mission, flown by the Space Shuttle Discovery from September 29 to October 3, 1988, marked a pivotal moment of resilience and triumph over adversity, as it was the first flight following the Challenger disaster in January 1986. The successful completion of STS-26, which deployed the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite-C (TDRS-C) into orbit, was critical in restoring faith in NASA's space shuttle program. It demonstrated NASA's commitment to improving safety protocols, the reliability of the shuttle as a reusable spacecraft, and the continued importance of human spaceflight. The mission served as a testament to the dedication and spirit of the space community, proving that the lessons learned from the tragedy were instrumental in advancing space exploration and ensuring the safety of future missions.
