Description

Space Shuttle IBM-Manufactured Computer Input/ Output Processing Unit Prototype. Weighing in at over fifty pounds and 10.5" x 7.5" x 22" in size, this is a reminder at how far we've come in computer technology in the last forty plus years. Features six data ports located between two hand brackets on front. All interior electronics are gold-plated. Metal ID tag reads in part: "CII- MC615 0001 2033, SERIAL NO.- 003, CONTRACT NO. NAS- 914000, INPUT/ OUTPUT PROCESSOR, DATE OF MG 3/27/77, MODEL TYPE- PROTOTYPE". Appears to be unflown as "ENG TEST ONLY" has been stenciled in large black lettering on side. These units were one-third of the Space Shuttle computer system along with the Central Processing Unit and the Mass Memory Unit. Historic piece of the Shuttle program with great display potential. Has signs of age and handling, fine.
